Kurnool was earlier called Kandenavolu, which meant the town of grease. Legend has it that in the 12th century, the Odderas were carting stones for the construction of the Navabrahmeswara temple at Alampur and before they could cross the Tungabhadra the local villagers gave the men grease to apply on their cart wheels. Kandenavolu, in course of time, came to be known as Kurnool.
